Message from the President I
have written this month’s report a little early because at time of
publication Louise and I will be on a holiday. We trust that later
in March we will be safely home following a great time away.
Last month, I drew readers' attention to the State Government’s
proposals for more intensive development. The Trust’s submission has
been lodged with the NSW State Government and a copy can be read CLICK HERE.
The hot weather and recent big storms remind us that any planning needs
to take climate change into account. This includes the colour of
the roofs of new buildings, the maintenance of trees and their canopy, the recognition that large parts of our suburbs are within bushfire zones.
Separate to our submissions on policy issues, we have also lodged
submissions on some recent development applications. You will find the
Trust’s submissions by CLICKING HERE.
During the last month, I spoke at a meeting of the Dural Historical
Society on Murder and Mayhem as related to Beecroft and Cheltenham. I
was very surprised and a little daunted, to find that it was one of
their biggest gatherings. What was even worse was to discover that (yet
again) a number of the people present knew more than I did!!
I attended a meeting of the Friends of Ahimsa with
representatives of the National Trust also in attendance. The National
Trust is planning an exhibition about Marie Byles. Her story can
be found on the History Group’s web site CLICK HERE. Marie Byles gifted her property Ahimsa,
to the National Trust and they will shortly be sending to us a list of
her books and other items of memorabilia that are missing from their
collection. The hope is that some of us might be able to lend
these items to the National Trust. We also had a long discussion about
bushcare and a survey of the property’s vegetation and what the National
Trust might do in response to a Conservation Management Plan.
Marie Byles was always keen to learn of new ideas for practical ways in which to care for our environment.
Along those same lines of practicality, we are interested to know the
thoughts of those Beecroft residents (and others), about how the new bin
removal arrangements that have been introduced by the Parramatta City
Council shire are faring.
I attended the AGM of the Epping Civic Trust at which some interesting
speakers were heard. A dedicated group of people stood for
election to the committee.
The Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust will be holding our AGM on the
evening of Thursday 18 April in the Beecroft Presbyterian Church Hall.
I look forward to catching up with many of you when I am back home in Beecroft.
Annual General Meeting 2024 The
Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust's next AGM will be held on the 18th
April at the Beecroft Presbyterian Church Hall in Welham Street at
7:30pm.
Because the State Governments proposed housing reforms have sparked much
interest and debate, the trust has invited a guest speaker to address
the meeting.
The guest speaker at the AGM will be Linda Corkery, Emeritus
Professor of the School of Built Environment at the University of New
South Wales.
Linda is also a former President of the Australian Institute of
Landscape Architecture. Her expertise includes people/place
relationships, urban parks and open space planning and design and green
infrastructure planning.

Beecroft Orchestra’s First Concert for 2024 is ‘Memories of Spain’ conducted
by Joanna Drimatis on Sunday 7th April, 2024 at 2.30pm in
the Cheltenham Girls High School new Performance Hall. The Spanish
flavour of this concert comes from Spain-inspired music of Rodrigo, Bizet, Rimsky-Korsakov and Chabrier.
The soloist will be Andrew Blanch
on Guitar. Andrew is President of the Classical Guitar
Society in Sydney and has independently released a ‘Spanish Guitar
Music’ Album. Rodrigo’s ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’ was
inspired by the gardens at the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, the
spring resort palace and gardens built by Philip II in the
last half of the 16th century and rebuilt in the middle of the 18th
century by Ferdinand VI. It includes a dialogue
between classical guitar and other solo orchestral instruments Bizet’s ‘Toreador song’ from
Carmen Suite displays the celebratory confidence of the Toreador as he
is cheered by the crowd on entering the bullfighting ring. Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov’s ‘Capriccio Espagnol’, composed in 1887, is based on lively Asturian dance music and Spanish folk melodies. España, one of the few pieces Chabrier wrote
originally for orchestra, has assured his fame. Composed in 1883
following a trip to Spain, this rhapsody captures the color and
excitement of Andalusian music and reveals Chabrier's imaginative flair
for instrumentation.
The program also features the Australian composer Miriam Hyde, with her ‘Happy Occasion Overture’ which was conceived in a spirit of recreation.
